Shop For Your Shape: Winter Coats

Friends often ask me: "How do I to accentuate my assets and hide the parts of my body I like less?" The truth is all bodies are beautiful no matter their shape or size. But here's another truth: certain silhouettes look better on some body shapes than others.

We all know our bodies best, but have you ever thought about the shape of your body relative to the clothes you wear? Your body type may be a ruler, an apple, a pear, or an hourglass depending on your curves.

Where I come from it's the summer, but in the Northern Hemisphere it's about to get really cold, so let's talk winter coats! Learn to accentuate your assets by identifying your body type below.

Ruler:

Those with a ruler figure have a straight up and down silhouette and a waist that isn't defined. When it comes to jackets, the trick is to create definition. Outerwear with full or structured shoulders - like an enlarged or broad collar - and a nipped-in or belted waist will instantly create the illusion of an hourglass. Click to shop my faves:

Pear:

A pear body shape is characterized by a larger bottom and a well-defined waist. The key to dressing a pear body shape is to enhance the upper body while emphasizing the waist. Opt for jackets with shoulder or upper body detailing - like duffle closures, fur hoods, and pronounced collars - which will visually broaden the body to create balance. Here are a few of my top picks:

Apple:

An apple or oval body type has a large bust, narrow hips, and a full midsection. The key to creating the illusion of a slimmer physique and a smaller waistline? Choosing a coat with vertical details - like buttons or zips - that will visually elongate and stretch the figure for a leaner look. Shop my picks below:

HOURGLASS:

You have curves so show them off! Choosing a jacket with an A-line fit or skirt-style swing will accentuate your waist and show off your hips. You'll love these styles. Click to shop.
